Who am I?
Hey, I’m Matt, an adventurer, travel lover and family man from Cambridge in the UK. This is my son, daughter, and I, watching a breathtaking sunset in Italy, one of my favourite places to visit. The dream was simple: escape the rat race, travel more while creating unforgettable memories with my family, build something for me, and do something to give me the zest for life again. But the path to get there seemed anything but straightforward.
My journey began on a typical Monday morning, starting like any other. The alarm buzzed at 5:30 a.m, the sign that another weekend had been and gone in a flash. I dragged myself up and headed out to another day in a job that was sucking the life out of me, where the minutes felt like hours. Has it come to this? Approaching 40 years old and with an ever-increasing sense of unfulfilment. Something had to change, and fast because looking at my life 10 years down the line still doing the same thing, in the same energy-sapping routine scared the crap out of me!!
I was unhappy in my career and had been for several years, working long hours for a boss who didn’t value me and on a career path that didn't align with me. I stuck at it for a long time because I earned a good salary, and had a family to support, but it was coming at a cost to me and my mental health.
I knew there was so much more to life than this, and thanks to sheer determination, lots of help and open-mindedness, I discovered a new path.
My career never really excited me, but it was paying the bills! But I knew there's more to life than that. It came to a point where I looked at my life ten years down the line, still stuck doing what I didnt enjoy everyday scared the crap out of me. I felt a bit like a dream was dying inside of me, and I wasnt prepared to let this happen. I craved something different, something exciting.
My bucket list kept growing, but work left me with little time to check off those dreams. I didn’t want to wait until retirement in the hope I had enough money and energy to do all the things I dreamed of doing.
Supporting my parents in their retirement was also a driving force. Just as they supported me, I wanted to give back.
Determined to create a new outcome, I was willing to give it my all to escape the rat race and break free from the daily grind. I wanted a life of purpose and fulfilment, and I dreamed of earning an income that would provide the lifestyle I desired.
I asked myself "Am I willing to trade the next 15-20 years of my life still living the same way?" The answer was no.
Then I asked myself "Am I willing to sacrifice a couple of hours each evening and invest in myself to learn a skill that can change my life?" Of course I was.
What I wanted more than anything was to build my own identity and be an example to my children and show them that you dont have to follow the staus quo to be successful.
My journey hasn’t been without its challenges, pushing me beyond my comfort zone at times, but it's been the most rewarding journey in my personal growth.
My only regret is that I didn't start sooner!
